Welcome to Calm Distress

LEARN NEW SKILLS FOR LIFE, IN YOUR OWN TIME

Thank you for registering for Calm Distress, an online course from NHS Lanarkshire Psychological Services. This page is where you can access the five videos that make up the course, and download the accompanying booklets if you wish.

We’d suggest you watch Calm Before The Storm first of all: that will give you an introduction to the course. The next three sessions – Calm Body, Calm Thoughts and Calm Behaviours – can be watched in any order: simply start where you feel it would be most useful for you. Stay Calm is the last session, wrapping up all the skills you’ve learned and helping you keep on putting them into practice.

Calm Before the Storm

This focuses on getting to know our emotions, and sets up the course. There are two booklets with this session: an introduction, and then the first workbook. You don’t need to use the workbooks: they are there if you want them and think they will help. Calm Distress is designed for you to use in the way that suits you best.

Calm Body

Calm Body

This session looks at what we feel in our bodies when we’re stressed or distressed, and how we can learn to manage some of those feelings. It also explores how we can take care of our physical health, which in turn gives our mental health a boost.

Calm Thoughts

Calm Thoughts

What’s the link between our thoughts and our feelings? That’s the focus of this session, which also teaches a range of coping strategies for when unhelpful thoughts show up.

Calm Behaviours

Calm Behaviours

What we do makes a big difference, in any situation. Here you can learn more about the automatic responses that we all have to stress and distress, and learn ways in which we can try doing things differently.

Stay Calm

The last session, this is all about how we can keep putting our new skills into practice, and keep on making positive changes.

A note about the workbooks: The booklets have been designed to be read and filled in on screen, rather than printed out. We think you will find this easier if you save them onto a laptop or desktop computer, rather than a phone or tablet. Whatever device you use, we would recommend that you download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software: this will let you fully engage with the booklets.

In some circumstances we may be able to provide printed copies of the booklets. Please email us if you would like to request this.
